Animal Socialization

Service Identification | Reports to the Kennel Services Director ans/or Weekend Supervisor.

Purpose/Goals of this position | To help with the animals' mental and physical health/temperment while they are kenneled. This is accomplished by taking the animals out for walks, brushing them, talking to them and petting/working with their behaviors and manners.

Essential Functions | Participating in the active care of animals, such as lifting and carrying them, being pulled along by their leashes, bending, stooping and reaching to/for them. Free from any serious allergies from animals or products used on/for them. Standing or walking for extended periods of time (sometimes entire shift).

Responibilities | The duties include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Exercising/walking and brushing dogs.
  2. Brushing cats, handling and playing with them in adoption room or outside cattery.
  3. Teaching dogs manners, obedience and how to walk on a leash.

Restrictions | A kennel volunteer is restricted from the following:

  1. Giving advice to or helping customers, adoption counseling.
  2. Entering unauthorized areas without permission.
  3. Feeding animals or giving treats without permission.
  4. Handling cleaning supplies, treatments or lotions.
  5. Working with wildlife or livestock.
  6. Adopting a pet within the first 3 months of service.
