
K-9 Headstart Trainer
This volunteer opportunity is limited to those with a recognized trainers certificate and documented experience. Please see "socialization" if you are not a certified trainer.
Service Identification | Reports to the Volunteer Services Director and/or Behavior Programs Director
Goals of this position | To help modify the animals general disposition. Teaching the animal good manners, how to walk on a leash, and to obey commands. This is accomplished by continually working with the animal and rewarding him/her for good behavior.
Essential Functions | Undergoing additional training on animal temperment and on constructive ways to curtail bad behavior. Actively training the animals to walk on a leash, to obey commands and to have an overall pleasing disposition. Many of these animals are being given a second chance at adoption and are very susceptible to this type of behavioral training.
Responsibilities | The duties include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Working and training the dogs to obey commands.
- Walking the dogs on leashes.
- Teaching the dogs manners and obedience.
Restrictions | A K-9 Headstart Trainer is restricted from the following:
- Giving animal or medical advice to or helping customers, including adoption counseling.
- Entering unauthorized areas without permission.
- Feeding animals or giving treats without permission.
- Handling cleaning supplies, treatments or lotions.
- Working with wildlife or livestock.
- Adopting a pet within the first 3 months of service.
- No one may volunteer unless they have attended both orientations, therefore a volunteer may not bring any guests while they are volunteering for NHS.
